PostSubject: Visual Processing Disorder?   Sat 15 Aug 2009, 8:40 am

Hi everyone,

Firstly, I need to start with an apology.

I havent been around as much as I would like over the past month. As you all know I have been fighting with our LEA to get the right support for Aimee at school which went as far as tribunals etc. With out great success.

Then just this week we were seen by an expert in visual processing disorders who has prescribed Aimee some very funky green glasses.
During the assessment I was quite literally 'gobsmacked' at what coloured light can do to effect people.
It effected taste and muscle tone even her mood, and we hadnt even looked at the change in her academic ability!
We are waiting for the finished pair of glasses to arrive before the start of the school term & I'm going to feel very smug telling the LEA!!!!

It also highlighted an auditory processing problem too & we are now waiting for an appointment to assess that!

Apparently though - and the main reason that Im writing all this, is that visual processing difficulty is very common but notoriously misdiagnosed, especially in premature or previously oxygen dependent children. (Apparently it is often just categorised into 'Global delay'.)

So the link below - is the website of the specialist we went to see and a link to the National Autistic Society who advocate his work whole heartedly. ( He was also excellent at putiing Aimee & Mum at ease!)

It may be of help to some of you.
I will also put a link to another site I found, which is really good at describing / diagnosing visual processing difficulty & which may be enough evidence for you to confirm or appease a worry you might have.

Ian Jordan - http://www.jordanseyes.com/index.htm

NAS - http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1181&a=10727

Visual processing / Helen Irlan - http://irlen.com/index.php?s=selftests

If anyone would like more info about our assessment etc, do let me know & I will be happy to chat about it. Im beginning to think this is a seriously untapped resource for our kids!
If enough people want to know, Im happy to set up a live webchat?

As always, Thank you to everyone in this community for your support. In every sense of the word!

Warmest Wishes
Liz
