PostSubject: BP issues after preeclampsia   Thu 13 Aug 2009, 11:31 am

Hi,

As some of you know, I had very early onset, very severe PE in early May and my daughter died. My BP went pretty high, at worst about 220/110 and I was discharged on nifedipine. I had managed to come off all BP medication by the beginning of July though, and it seemed ok. In mid July I was consistently getting BP readings of around 120/80, 125/75, so fairly normal, though I would have liked it to be lower.

However, by the end of July I was seen in renal clinic with BP 131/88 and 128/89, so bouncing up again. Last week I had it checked again by GP at 130/88, and today even higher again at 142/88.

I'm not sure whether it is still too soon post pre eclampsia for me (though now over 3 months, my due date was tomorrow Crying or Very sad ), or whether I am now developing chronic hypertension as a result of what happened. I don't understand why my BP "seemed" to have recovered, but now "seems" to be increasing again. Has anyone else experienced something like this?

I feel like I am doing everything I can to try and control it. I run 30-40 miles per week, I have low BMI, I eat 8-10 portions of fruit and vegetables per day, cook myself so there is no added salt etc. etc. Problem is I have always done most of these, so there is relatively little I can do to change my lifestyle which might help. I guess I am very hacked off by the unfairness and cruelty of life too at the moment, my daughter died and as if that weren't enough I seem to be left with these health issues as well. I really want to try and control BP before thinking about another pregnancy, but don't seem to be able to....
But I know that others have been there as well.....

I don't think I had high blood pressure before pregnancy, but think it was always high normal i.e. 120/80 or slightly higher, but still 120s/80s.

Don't know if anyone has any advice or reassurance? Will this still recover? Has anyone started a subsequent pregnancy still struggling to control BP from the previous preeclamptic one and did this make it any worse?

Thanks a lot

Jules

Hi Jules,

It sounds like you are doing all the right things to regain control of your blood pressure and seeing the renal specialists is a good move too.

Im sure the ladies here will tell you (as I know there are a few) who have gone on to have children with high blood pressure.

It is still relatively a short time since Alices arrival, even though that may feel very different for you. It can take a year for blood pressure to normailse, for others even longeer and for the very unfortunate few, not at all.

Sometimes though, I think one can take their blood pressure too much. By doing it so frequently can actually artificially increase a blood pressure for some people. Maybe by limiting yourself to monitoring once a week might help settle things down? Is it possible you now have an element of 'white coat' effect?

Hang in there Jules.

Best Wishes
Liz

Hi,
I had exactly the same worries after my PE and was still up and down after 4 mths. I asked for a 24 hr monitor and that showed that my BP was fine and prob. due to white coat. On my last BP test (18 mths after birth) it was the first time that I had not been anxious once I heard the cllick of the BP machine starting up!
I know how you feel about PE. I'm just over 8 stone and keep an active life (inc. running) and watch what I eat (well when chocolate or biscuits aren't around!!) and there is no history of PE in the family! I do feel robbed aswell.
It sounds like you are doing whatever possible to keep yourself fit and healthy and that is all we can do. I'm sorry about your little girl and I do hope you can go on to have another little one as soon as.
Keep chin up and have some chocolate - it does us all good!
